Environment Or Employee: What Is Your Weak Link?
When productivity is low, money isn’t being made, or you don’t feel like someone is doing everything they can for your business, it will often feel like you have a weak link on your hands. With everyone else working hard at their jobs, your slacker will stand out, and it will be easy to see that there is something wrong. In quite a lot of cases, though, this is something you have direct control over. The working environment they are exposed to could be negative for them, making it hard for them to think about the work which they are doing.
Solving this sort of issue is going to start with some assessment. First, you need to be able to figure out when your employee’s lapses are occuring, as this can give you a good idea as to what might be causing them. If they are looking out of a window all the time, for example, they might be find it hard to concentrate with things going on around them, and this will be easy to solve. Some issues will be a little more complicated than this. In reality, though, once you can spot the trigger, you will have everything you need to make progress, with the employee in the example above simply being moved to a desk away from windows.
As a big part of the assessment process, it could also be worth talking to the person in question. Most people will want to know when their job is in jeopardy, as this gives them the chance to start looking for something else, while also giving them an opportunity to make things right. A lot of people won’t realise that they aren’t pulling their weight until you’ve had a chat with them. Some people, on the other hand, will be completely aware of what is wrong with them, and can even give themselves an accurate diagnosis without any help from the doctor, but will need you to start a dialog before they are comfortable talking about it.
Finally, as the last area to consider, it’s time for decision time. You can never dismiss someone for nothing, and you will have to work hard to prove that they aren’t working hard enough, issuing warnings before taking the plunge. You should make sure that you have a lawyer to help you with this process. Alternatively, for those with an environmental problem, looking for new offices to rent could be the best way to get rid of the issues entirely. Of course, while this process is a competitive one, it will be worth fighting for your passion to make sure that you get the best possible property.
Hopefully, with all of this in mind, you will be feeling ready to take your business by the horns and identify the issues which are holding it back. While this sort of work can be hard, and it might feel bad to blame an employee, it will be worth working hard to make sure everyone is doing the work they’re being paid for, or there isn’t much point in them being there.
