Political Affairs and You: To What Degree Will Brexit Affect Vapers?
There seems to be only one topic of conversation in the UK and it is showing no signs of being resolved anytime soon, plus the uncertainty surrounding how goods and services will be impacted outside of the EU membership is a cause for concern for many, including vapers.
If you have your favorite tobacco-flavored e-liquid products it is understandable that you might have concerns about whether supplies are going to be impacted by Brexit and if the price of these products is going to spike after the UK finally leaves the EU.
Here is an overview of what Brexit might mean for vapers.
Carry on as normal
Although it could be argued that life doesn’t feel that normal under the specter of Brexit and the political uncertainty it is creating it should be remembered that nothing has changed just yet and all the current laws and regulations are still in force.
Even if the UK exits the European Union without a trade deal it could conceivably take a number of years for any changes to regulations to come into force.
Tobacco Products Directive (TPD)
With Brexit hogging the headlines it can be easy to overlook the fact that the vaping industry already has its own laws and regulations within the UK.
TPD was primarily intended to regulate the tobacco industry, in general, but there is a section in the bill that specifically deals with electronic cigarettes.
If the UK leaves the EU without a deal there is always the possibility that the UK government could repeal the existing TPD-based regulations, but there has been no official notification that this might take place within a specific timeframe.
The main point to make with regard to TPD and Brexit is that whatever the outcome of negotiations to leave the EU it is widely considered unlikely that vapers will be impacted unduly in the short-term.
If anything, the UK government has shown a leaning toward a more tolerant outlook toward the vaping industry, while sensibly striking a decent balance between ensuring vaper’s safety is paramount and encouraging innovation and product improvements.
What about costs?
One area of concern is whether new taxes will be introduced relating to electronic cigarettes, especially when you consider the drop in tax revenues the government is enduring as smokers make the switch to vape.
A key point here is that the EU has been keener to introduce taxes that would hit vaper’s pockets than the UK government. On that basis, leaving the EU might mean that UK vapers don’t get stung once Brexit finally happens.
The bottom line is that Brexit is unlikely to have an impact on vapers and the vaping industry in the UK, at least in the short term. However, there are potential cost issues to consider if exchange rates aren’t favorable, as ingredients sourced from outside the UK could become more expensive without a trade deal in place.
The political impact of Brexit has already proved seismic but if you are a vaper there is no obvious reason at this point in time to suggest that your enjoyment is going to be unduly impacted by the break-up of a long-standing European relationship.
