So, you’re thinking of becoming a podcaster, but have you really put a lot of thought into it? For example, do you know what needs to be done exactly? Maybe you’ve got the topics, you’ve got the themes and you’ve got the ideas all sorted. You know exactly what message you want to be sending out to the world. But just because you’ve got your message sorted does not mean that you should just simply dive straight in to podcasting.

You can’t expect to have a successful podcast, if you don’t have a successful plan first. Know Your Audience, Define Your Niche

One of the most important things that you should make sure that you sort out is knowing exactly who your audience is. The first thing that people will be asking you when they see your podcast is “what is it about?” In order to get a loyal fan base, you need to make sure that you can give a definite answer. Your audience will be the key to getting a good fan base, you need to make sure that your podcast is something that they will enjoy, but also something that you have a real passion for. 

If you don’t have any knowledge about your chosen topics, then your podcast won’t be successful. You also need to make sure that you can offer a unique insight into whatever your topic is. You should also make sure that the niche you pick is something quite specific, the more specific the more likely that your listeners will feel as though you are talking directly to them. They don’t say “the riches are in the niches” for nothing. The more specific your niche, the easier it is for you to create the perfect podcast for your listener. 

Get Recording Software

If you are really thinking about starting up a podcast, then you will need to make sure that you are skilled with things like editing and recording your episodes. If you aren’t familiar with recording software, then practice makes perfect. You can look for tutorials online and learn about everything right from the very start. Don’t just rely on the software to clean up the sound in the editing phase. You should also try and make your life a lot easier by choosing a sound friendly recording location. You should make sure to pick the quietest place in your home or office to record your episodes. You might find that you do better recording your episodes in the closet, or under a blanket. Obviously though, if you have a big budget or a company that is backing up your show, you probably will have access to a soundproof podcasting studio.

Get the Right Equipment

In order to help with things like audio, you need to make sure that you also invest in getting the right equipment. If people can’t hear due to too much background noise or because your voice isn’t crystal clear, then they won’t bother to stick with your podcast. There are far too many podcasts out there, so making sure that you are better than your competition is a big deal. So sure, whilst you can technically record a podcast with just your computer’s built in microphone, you’ll do a lot better by purchasing a high-quality microphone and headphone set. There are a few other podcast equipment that you can get though, for example, things like a computer, pop filter and a boom stand/microphone stand will make it a lot easier for you to make a successful podcast. If you can make a successful podcast, then you will probably find that making money (even with a small audience) will be a lot easier. Remember though, that the more effort that you put into your podcast now, the more you will get out of it. You might only be thinking of doing a podcast for fun, but a lot can come about from creating a successful podcast.
