Today we are looking at the essential things you need to do to keep the home safe this year.

1. Secure the Doors

The first thing you need to think about if you want to stop robbers from trying to get into your home is the doors. The doors are the first port of call for anyone trying to break into a house and if you aren’t careful a robber will walk straight in through the front door.

If your doors are a little out of shape and there are gaps in the space this can be a dangerous sign, and you need to make sure that you have doors which are the right size for the frame and ones which will stand up against being hit. Try to find a reinforced door and this will give you some peace of mind when in your home. You can even install a video doorbell so that you always know who is coming up to your front door.

2. Lock the Windows

Your windows will always be the second place a robber will check if they want to break into the house, and they need to be safe and secure. Make sure that if you have any mouldy or toeing window frames that you replace them as soon as you can to protect the structure of your home. Also make sure that there are no cracks or chips in the glass which a robber can use to break the window and get into the house. Lastly, whenever you leave the house make sure that the windows are shut and locked, and that the keys are nowhere in sight.

3. Light it up

If you want to effectively deter a robber from entering your home this year you will need to consider lighting up the space to stop them from being able to come in undetected. Most robbers will try to wait until night so that people cannot see them, however if you have a motion sensing light in your garden which can pick them up, it will likely scare them and make them turn around and go back the way they came.

4. Secure the Garage

The garage is a pretty popular entry point to the home as well as the doors and the windows, and because of this you need to remember to take some extra care when you are going in and out through this space. Make sure that all of the doors and secure and safe and also be sure that the walls of the garage themselves are safe and that they will protect your home.

5. Set Up a Security System

It is incredibly important for any home, especially in this day and age, to have an alarm system which protects it even when you are upstairs in bed. Make sure that you research a few different security systems and be sure that you take the extra time to ensure that they are safe and sound. If you have pets in the house you will need to choose a system which won’t immediate go off when a pet walks around the house in the evenings.

6. Lock Your Wi-Fi Network

Considering how technology focussed many of us are in our lives these days, it is surprising how many of us still forget to secure our WiFi network to stop others from using it. Think of your WiFi like a pathway to your home server system, and be aware that your home will likely be hacked if the wrong person gets access to your WiFi. This is why it is crucial for you to secure it with a password and only share it with your family and your closest friends.

7. Eliminate Hiding Places

When it comes to robbing your home, robbers will always look for houses which have a lot of cover around them so that they can’t be easily seen from the road or by you in your house. It is always nice to be able to plant trees and shrubs at the front of the house to look good, but it provides hiding places for criminals who want to steal from you. Make sure that you choose smaller shrubs and flowers for the front of the house and this will allow you to gain CCTV from anyone who has it across the street if anything ever happens. 8. Add Cameras

When we think about the many methods there are out there to keep our home secure and safe, it is unsurprising that cameras are at the top of many of our lists. Cameras can give you a huge sense of safety in your home because a lot of robbers will be deterred by the mere sight of cameras in the first place. Make sure that you think about ways that you can place cameras around the house to cover all blind spots and also place a camera or two next to your motion sensing lights for easy images.

9. Get a Safe

A safe might be something you only thought jewellers and other businesses would keep, but it is a good idea for you to have one too. If you have a lot of valuables which need to be kept safe, you can lock them up in here overnight or when you go away on holiday.
